Nov 2, 2009 Bridget Coila

With so many people worried about a swine flu epidemic , mobile phone application developers have responded by creating new apps to track and diagnose flu.

The number of swine flu apps available to track the global flu pandemic via mobile phone is quickly growing. Some of the applications are fairly useless, or even just plain silly, but others can actually help protect public health by alerting people to outbreaks and offering tips to prevent or combat the illness.

Here are some of the best options out now for tracking, diagnosing and dealing with the flu.

Harvard Medical School's Swine Flu Application for the iPhone

Released in October, 2009, the "HMS Mobile Swine Flu Center" is one of the best of the bunch of new swine flu applications available from Apple's online store. It contains a diagnostic questionnaire that can help identify if someone has the H1N1 virus, gives tips on prevention, provides local hotlines based on the users GPS location, tracks local outbreaks, offers learning videos about the swine flu and gives users the opportunity to have their questions about the flu answered by Harvard professors. The cost of the Harvard swine flu app is $1.99.

The iPhone Application "H1N1 Swine Flu Defender" Tracks Outbreaks

The H1N1 Swine Defender by Current Clinical Strategies Publishing is another app for the iPhone that tracks outbreaks and provides information about the pandemic. The H1N1 Swine Defender application is a fairly inexpensive $.99 and provides symptom diagnosis and tips.

"Outbreaks Near Me"– A Free Swine Flu Tracking Application

The free Outbreaks Near Me application for the iPhone, developed by researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and the MIT Media Lab, tracks local outbreaks and allows individuals to report outbreaks in their area. The service coordinates the data it receives with HealthMap.org and serves up detailed info on all sorts of outbreaks, not just swine flu.

Free "Swine Flu Upto-the-Minute" iPhone App Provides Headlines and Updates

For people interested in tracking the latest headlines and information about H1N1, the "Swine Flu Upto-the-Minute" app provides these things for free. Users can find out the current pandemic alert level, which countries are safe for travel and lots of general information about the virus and its spread.

Android-Compatible "Flu Tracker Free" Helps Android Users Keep Track of H1N1

"Flu Tracker Free" lets users track all types of flu, including H1N1, Avian flu and seasonal influenza. It contains updates, health alerts and educational information about a variety of flu types.

Some basic Internet apps tracking swine flu and other influenzas are also accessible through mobile phones. Here are a few popular online appications:

  • "Google Flu Trends" tracks H1N1 and other flu infections around the globe using its search expertise to locate outbreaks and responses based on search queries and news.

  • "The Flu Tracker" from Rhiza Labs, developed by Pittsburg researcher Dr. Henry Niman with tools from Google Maps, also tracks various types of flu outbreaks.

  • Microsoft's "H1N1 Response Center" is a free online site that lets people check their symptoms through a self-assessment tool designed by Emory University scientists and determine if they should head to a doctor for possible swine flu treatment or stay at home.

With so many mobile applications and sites available for tracking and dealing with H1N1 and other flu viruses, there's no excuse for being caught unaware by a flu pandemic.
