The most popular tilt game in the history of the iPhone, NGMoco's Rolando has become one of the top mobile games in the world thanks to the creative Rolandoland.

The round and rolling equivalent of the mustachioed Mario of NES fame in mobile games, the Rolandos of Rolandoland have created an avalanche of acclaim in the world of iPhone games.

What may soon became the charter member of the iPhone gaming community, 2008’s Rolando gives users a lovable character, a mesmerizing interface, and a challenge for the imagination, the intellect, and the index finger (without the guns and zombies) in Rolandoland.

The Rolandos of Rolandoland

With 35 levels of rolling and rollicking, this ngmoco brainchild has perfected the tilt system, adding irresistible graphics, a new spin on levels and bosses, and enough cranks, levers and gadgets for the shortest of attention spans.

Over four worlds and three dozen levels, the populace of Rolandoland – the little rolling balls that form the posse of protagonists – maneuver you through forests, canyons, volcanoes, and a myriad of obstacles and devices.

The game finds its originality in its concept of teamwork and multiple players. Allowing you to control one or many at one time, the kind of intuitiveness that allowed past games to thrive (like the dual-charactered Sonic games for SEGA), shines in this multi-playered single player.

The Rolandos struggle through spiders and monsters to save their bloated and apparently narcoleptic king. Using three or four Rolandos at a time, the player must use this tilt game to navigate the walls and obstacles of each level, and save two or more of their Rolandos (sometimes as many as six) before the time expires.

With point levels for diamonds collected, protagonists saved, and time earned, the game can play as many as two or three different times through, and features full-tilt bonus levels, featured on iPhone application commercials across the television waves.

The levels on this mobile game feature different characters with different skills, including a tilt-enhancing Rolando that sticks to walls and rolls over any surface. With itlt game applications for jumping and changing characters, the action can move from spot to spot across the game board seamlessly.

The originality of Rolando, though, is not in its delightful graphics, intriguing devices, or colorful characters, but in its creativity. Not in defeating enemies is this game won, but in getting to the finish with your entire team. The bad guys, populace enough to present a problem, do not overcome the game. It is about the good guys, their creativity and capabilities, and the player utilizing this.

Rolando is iPhone Game of the Year

With levers to lift, lifts to raise, and wheels to spin, the iPhone game not only utilizes the Rolandos, but the player as well. The gamer must help to manipulate the world and the levels to allow the Rolandos access across Rolandolando.

With players that can not be moved by themselves (such as the royal King and Prince), the player is forced to use other players to shift these immobile characters across the board.

Hailed as the game of the year, and among the top featured games for 2009, Rolando is available it its entirety for $5.99. And if a kingly character who slumbers throughout isn’t original, then the creators steered themselves wrong with this one.
