Technology changes fast. BlackBerry smartphones are no exception.

In just the last month, there has been a lot news from Research In Motion, maker of the ubiquitous tool of the businessperson, the BlackBerry.

The smartphone company has announced quite a few new plans for their handsets. Some of the plans involve handsets and applications that will help to increase worker productivity. Other announcements from the Canadian company based in Waterloo, Ontario, seem to be directed at helping their customers make the most out of their downtime. Here are just a few announcements that have made the news recently:

BlackBerrys and Mobile Social Networking

On September 11, 2008, RIM announced MySpace for BlackBerry smartphones. The mobile application allows BlackBerry users to easily access all of the features that they would normally find in the desktop version of the social networking site.

Chris DeWolfe, chief executive officer of MySpace said in a statement, "Our partnership enables millions of BlackBerry smartphone users to leverage MySpace on the go and access content, friend networks, and status and mood updates anywhere at any time."

Earlier this year, on April 1, 2008, Mark Guibert, Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Research In Motion touted a similar application that was developed for the social network Facebook, "This innovative mobile application, combined with the refined usability of BlackBerry smartphones and the incredible convenience of the push-based BlackBerry service, makes it easier than ever for Facebook users to stay connected with people wherever they choose."

Radio on your BlackBerry

Slacker, Inc announced plans to launch a free personal radio application for BlackBerry smartphones. Dennis Mudd, CEO of Slacker, Inc., had this to say about the new mobile service in a statement, "Working with RIM allows us to provide our listeners with added flexibility and convenience to make the most of the Slacker Personal Radio service."

Purchase Tickets on the Go

Ticketmaster and RIM are working together to develop an application that allows users to purchase tickets to events on their handset. When the application is made available to the public, Blackberry users will be able to purchase tickets to events from Ticketmaster.com, TicketsNow.com, and GetmeIn.com. BlackBerrys are now the “Official Smartphone of Ticketmaster.”

New Developer Tools for BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip

Desktop simulators for the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphones are available to software developers. The release of these simulators is significant because it allows for easier testing of mobile applications before they are released to the end user. Whenever development kits are released for technology products, it is usually a good thing for the consumer. This means that the public will most likely soon have more software options to choose from.

"Each new BlackBerry smartphone presents an opportunity for mobile developers to create new applications or extend their innovations with the latest advances in mobile technology and application development," said Alan Brenner, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry platforms at Research In Motion in a statement.

This BlackBerry news involving BlackBerry Storm, Ticketmaster, Slacker Personal Radio service and RIM is just the tip of the iceberg. Watch for future articles updating you on the latest BlackBerry information.
