It's becoming more popular to sell old mobile phones when starting a new contract. Many sites will buy old phones for cash. What are the ways to make the most money?

Consumers are becoming more savvy about selling old mobile phone handsets. A new contract or a handset upgrade leaves many with a perfectly useful handset lying around the house doing nothing.

The fact is, many consumers are finding that they can recycle these phones by selling them on to mobile phone resellers. But, the payments given for each phone may vary depending on a range of issues. For those selling or buying, it's time to take a look at what comes into play here.

What Will Resellers Pay For Old Mobile Phones?

The money that a consumer can earn from selling a mobile phone will vary. To a certain extent this will depend on:

  • The phone model (i.e. how up to date it is).
  • The condition of the phone (i.e. how well it works and whether it has any damage or defects).

So, for example, a relatively new phone that is a desirable model and that is in good condition will be worth more money than an older model that has a dodgy battery and that is a bit battered.

Most mobile phone resellers will, however, look at most phones and some will buy old mobiles even if they aren't in premium condition or full working order. The standards looked for here include:

  • Does the phone switch on and off OK?
  • Does it work 100% or is it faulty in some way?
  • Has the phone been damaged in some way?
  • Is the battery still in the phone and does it work?
  • Is the screen working OK and does it have any damage (i.e. cracks and scratches)?

It would be wrong to assume that a phone that doesn't work so well won't sell. Many companies will still buy these phones but they may not pay such high rates.

In some cases people are simply happy to get some money for their phone here. In others they may try to improve the phone to make it worth more.

How to Make More Money Selling Old Mobile Phones

In some cases the faults or problems that come with an old mobile phone could actually be rectified by the owner before they try to sell it. If, for example, a phone has a battered or damaged casing then it is relatively easy (and cheap) to buy a new casing to replace the old one. This will immediately make the phone look better from a cosmetic point of view and could increase the price that is offered.

One of the most common issues with older phones is the battery which will lose its charge over time. Some people looking to sell old mobile phones will simply buy a new battery to replace the old one. This could, once again, significantly improve the price that is quoted by the mobile phone reseller. It may be worth checking on the different quotes that would be offered here for the phone with the old battery and with a new one to see if this is worth doing.
