Reasons to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G

BossPrefs, Categories and Winterboard Allow Incredible Cusomization

Jun 18, 2009 Christian Nathler

Despite the release of Apple's latest software update, there are still plenty of reasons to jailbreak and add exclusive apps and features to the iPhone.

iPhone owners have demanded more from their phone ever since it was released. There was always something incomplete, insufficient or absent altogether with their new mobile masterpiece. So they blogged about it and started forums until one could reach a general consensus about exactly what else needs to be added to the iPhone.

Just when Apple thought they had created the first phone to have it all, a team of hackers developed jailbreaking - a relatively simple process, against Apple policy, that allows users access to their phone's software and the ability to install third-party applicatioions. All of a sudden there was a way to out-innovate Apple and jailbreaking became commonplace.

Finally, two years after the release of the first iPhone and after many minor software updates, Apple recognized what consumers felt the iPhone still needed and released the iPhone version 3.0 update on June 17, 2009.

They synced the world's most coveted smart phone with its consumer's desires and seemingly eliminated the need for jeailbreaking by adding an array of dazzling features. iPhone owners can now copy and paste, send multimedia messages, text in landscape mode and search through their entire phone. The new iPhone software is impressive, it might as well be a new phone altogether.

It's hard to believe that there could still be something missing, but there is. Even with the added features of update 3.0, the iPhone's premier hacker squad, the Dev Team, have been working tirelessly to jailbreak it. On top of the latest features, there are still some apps that remain exclusive to jailbroken iPhones:

Winterboard

For whatever reason, Apple have allowed their customers to only mildly customize their phones. With Winterboard, one has the ability to complete transform the user interface of the iPhone - Everything from custom icons and skins to batteries made of fire and Family Guy sliders.

Categories

This handy feature allows iPhone owners to group their apps into distinct categories with custom titles and icons. It's perfect for organizing the home screen and can hide apps that clutter one's phone.

Cycorder

This app is a powerful video recorder with very impressive quality and decent playback options. A video recorder will be available on the iPhone 3G S, but Apple's latest update has not extended the phone's camera's capabilities past basic photo capturing.

BossPrefs

BossProfs has a variety of useful features. One can toggle settings for Edge, 3G or Wifi, manage power settings like reboot, power off, fast respring, and respring and lock, and hide apps that are rarely used. Best of all, it allows users to replace the generic battery on their phone with a numeric value.

Apple made huge progress with their latest software update, further launching the iPhone into a league of its own amongst smartphones. Add to that the above features jailbreaking offers, and the iPhone is as complete as it gets for the time beig
