Although the Droid was only recently released, the Android Market is already brimming with free apps for this brand new device.

The Droid, Verizon Wireless and Motorola's answer to the iPhone, was only recently released to the public, but already, the Android Market is loaded with hundreds of free apps. However, discerning between the good apps and the bad apps isn't necessarily an easy feat, so here are some reviews of tried-and-true cool free apps.

Taskiller

This simple little app can help anyone free up memory on his or her Droid, allowing the phone to run better and faster. When this app is started up, it produces a list of things currently running in the background of the device, with options to choose which apps to close.

One of the features of Droid that is both a blessing and a curse is the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously; it's a blessing because now the user doesn't have to shut down one app to run another, but a curse because apps don't close themselves, causing them to linger in the background, silently eating up the phone's resources.

This app is a must-have for every Droid user, because without it, the device's performance is guaranteed to suffer after prolonged use. Taskiller closes the app of the user's choosing simply by clicking on its name, freeing up the phone's memory, giving a large performance boost.

Ringdroid

With this very useful app, any Droid user can create his own ringtones using songs from his own music collection. After loading the app, the user sees a list of songs that are on the phone, chooses one of those songs, and is then taken to a very intuitive interface to create the ringtone. The desired portion of the song to be made into the ringtone is selecting using sliders on the timeline of the song.

The user then presses the save button, and the ringtone is created, ready for use on the phone. Any song can be turned into a ringtone, potentially saving users money since they no longer have to purchase ringtones separately.

PicSay

PicSay is a sort of stripped-down photo editor, allowing users to add text, props, effects and more to photos that they have taken with their Droid's very sharp, 5 Megapixel camera. Users can add word balloons, text, props like hair and eyes, and effects like distortions and spotlights After editing the photo, the user can then export the photo via Bluetooth, email, Facebook, text message and more. This very creative app can spruce up pictures with cool effects, making anyone's text messages more exciting.

Google Sky Map

Google Sky Map is a must-have tool for backyard astronomers, sailors who still navigate by the stars, or anyone who just likes cool new technology. Sky Map uses the Droid's highly accurate positioning system to display a map of all the stars and planets that are directly aligned with the device's screen.

When the device is rotated in a different direction, the on-screen map moves to reflect this position change. It is highly accurate, lining up perfectly with whatever stars are in the sky. This app is one of the coolest free apps available for the Verizon Wireless Droid.

Google Sky Map, PicSay, Ringdroid, and Taskiller are some of the best cool free apps available for the Verizon Wireless' new Droid. These applications demonstrate all of the new features of the Droid, showcasing the technology that went into this phone. While these apps are among the best, there are many more cool apps that can be downloaded for no cost at all, that are definitely worth checking out. Head over to the Android Market and see what impressive technology can be downloaded today!
